  1. How much do they cost? - Top

    2000
  2. List Price for a 2000 model Lightning is $31,400, including the destination charge.

    Options

California Emissions System (Mfr Code 422) - N/C
High Altitude Principal Use (Mfr Code 428) - N/C
License Plate Bracket (Mfr Code 153) - N/C
Soft Tonneau Cover (Mfr Code 86T) - $150

The Soft Tonneau is apparently not really available as an option. To the best of my knowledge, no 2000 Lightning has been delivered with one. Some have questioned the ability of the Tonneau to stay connected to the truck at 140 mph, and have suggested that as the reason for the cover's unavailability.

List Price for a 2001 model Lightning is $32,460 including the destination charge.  ($28,938 invoice price from Carpoint)

It has been reported that the Lightning is a 50-state vehicle, and that there are no differences between the CA smogger, the mountain Lightning and the "regular" version, other than the window sticker.

Most buyers have paid list price, or very close to list price. Some dealers are attempting to add a surcharge to the list price, but the availability of the Lightning is not so limited as to warrant this surcharge.

  3. Where can I get a new Lightning? - Top
  4. The Lightning can be purchased from any Ford SVT Dealer. Due to the limited production run of 4,000 - 7000  vehicles per year, availability is limited. You can find a Lightning on the lot, but most have been ordered by the buyer.

  6. Lightnings have reportedly been purchased using the Ford A Plan at some dealers. However, these vehicles are "on allocation", and not all dealers are willing to sell them at plan prices.

  1. What mods give the best bang for the buck? - Top
  2. The "no-brainer" mod is to install a tuner chip and and aftermarket air filter or MAF replacement. This combo is probably good for 30 HP and .4 seconds in the quarter mile.

If you still need more performance, a rear-end gear change to 3.73 or 4.10 is probably worthwhile. Of course, the improved acceleration may cause problems hooking up, so a set of slicks will be necessary next.

Other mods that people have tried are blower pulleys or /crank pulleys to spin the supercharger a bit faster, modified Cobra oval throttle bodies, ram-air kits and exhaust system mods.

There are differing opinions on the use of blower pulleys. One concern is the difficulty of installing and removing blower pulley without damaging the supercharger. Crank pulleys eliminate this issue, but another concern is the affect of increased revs on the longevity of the blower, and obvious warranty implications.

It appears that the throttle bodies will add about 6 HP at the rear wheels, based on the first dyno tests.

The jury is still out on the ram-air kits, which have not been impartially tested yet.

The stock Lightning exhaust is quite functional. The performance difference between stock and aftermarket exhausts is negligible for stock and chipped vehicles. A full exhaust system may be helpful for more radically modified vehicles, but the treshold point is not clear.

  4. No. The ECCs (engine computers) are different, so different chips are needed.

The EEC numbers are CUX1, CUX2 and CXN1 respectively

  6. Chips change the way the manufacturer's computer (in newer vehicles) function in relationship to how the engine, transmission, ect. inter-react with each other and in most cases increases horse power and torque of the vehicle.

If you read the following links you will get a good feel for it's function.

Yes, there are warranty issues with a chip.

Saying which chip is best is like saying which is better Ford, Chevrolet or Dodge. They are in most part all good. It all depends on which chip manufacturer one likes the best. In fact, there is a term used in the heat of battle when discussing chips and that is "Chip Wars." Manufacturers, and L owners all get in it. That is why there are only a few links to add to this FAQ is because many, many of the links deal with "Chip Wars" with little substance.

Some of the chip manufacturers are: Superchips, Swanson's, PCP, Inject Tech, etc. I personally like, oops I better shut up or I'll start a war.

  9. Air Filter Kits - Top
  10. The first mod you can make which is cheap is to put a K&N filter in your filter box, cost about $35.00. Performance and gas mileage will improve slightly.

There are three limited restriction airfilter kits on the market for the L. They make a much bigger improvement than the K&N above and make an awesome supercharger sound.

They are the PSP filter, Downs Filter and the Air Raid Filter Kit.

The PSP filter has had high reviews for quality and design. Potentially backordered.  Approx. cost $179.00 (includes shipping).

The Downs filter works once you modify it to fit together. Quality of workmanship is poor. Immediately available Approx. cost $130.00

Airaid quality good, protects from splashing water, may restrict more air than above two filters. Approx. cost $230.00

NOTE: None of the above filters will work with the PRO-M 80 MAF and the PRO-M 80 MAF comes with a filter. If you are contemplating a MAF, which most of us think is good, especially with combined with a chip, don't buy one of these filters. Cost of PRO-M 80 with filter Approx. $280.00

  12. The MAF reads the airflow in your inlet between the airfilter box and the metal intake. It's that black unit attached to the rubber hose right in front not the round one on the back side. New MAFs have the ability to read more air than the stock unit and therefore better mix the fuel and air. MAFS and airfilters are a good combination but most of your gain will come from the airfilter. To get a real benefit from a new MAF, a chip is needed. Currently there are two MAFs available. The only one to consider is the PRO-M 80 MAF. The other unit has been tested and is considered inferior to the PRO-M. PSP is working on a MAF but it has not been released for sale. THE PRO-M comes with a cone airfilter. Cost about $280.00 plus shipping. Available at http://www.houstonperformance.com/

NOTE:If you install an open single bore (bigger) throttle body you probably need to get your PRO-M recalibrated for the increased air flow.

  14. There are two pulleys that can be changed to increase blower speed. The upper pulley or the lower pulley. Both Eaton and Ford do not recommend changing the blower pulley. Upper pulleys are pressed on and very difficult to remove. Damage to the blower can occur. Some have changed the upper pulley any way. Lower pulleys have only recently (6/00) become available.

  16. I have read a lot about ramming air into the engine compartment. Can you tell me a little more?

Ram air is a good idea but because of the crazy curves of the Lightning intake it is not easy to make. Ram air hoods do not benefit the Lightning. One member, JohnnyLightning, is making a kit that picks of air from under the truck and brings it into the engine compartment. The kit is now being tested by our members.

The factory has set up the transmission for a soft shift by letting it slip into gear. It is said that this "slippage" gradually breaks down the trans. The kit eliminates this slippage by firmly putting it into gear.

  25. Throttle Bodies - Top
  26. All engines are lungs. Air in, air out. The more air in the better. Single bore throttle bodies allow more air into the blower than the factory's double bore unit. Just recently available (8/00), single bore units are currently undergoing testing by some of the Board members.

  33. Intercooler pump and fan - Top
  34. The intercooler pump only runs when the engine running. Running the pump while the engine is off will help cool the fluid and enable the blower to be cooler, especially when racing at the strip. Electric fan for the intercooler radiator is also a good idea if you are going to install this switch.

  35. Do I need an extra cooling fan? - Top
  36. Intercooler Fans are not necessary for day to day driving. They are necessary for drag racing for maintain an even temperature. The fan will make your runs more consistent which is important for bracket racing. Water Wetter is a good idea. See Water Wetter post.

  47. Mod Vendors and their websites

Many of the Lightning Vendors are both resellers and remarketers as well as innovators.
In other words some of their products are unique inventions of their own shops, some are others parts that have been modified or adapted for use on Lightning's and some are simply products made by others being resold often at a discount with the added value of the support you get from a dedicated Lightning Vendor.   The assembling of tested parts and the info that goes along with that is a value add that cant be easily measured.
Here are a few of the top Lightning Aftermarket vendors....
